Only players that have not been tagged as franchise players are available to be put up for auction. When a player is put up a starting bid will be placed. Bidding can go up as small as .1 until the contract reaches 10 then it must go up by .5, when the contract tops 20 then it must increase by 1m.
Highest bidder wins the player when there have been no bids in 24 hours. The number of years in a contract has no affect on the amount of money in the contract. Example: 15m through 2012 is equal to 15m through 2014
Also if you put up a player and no one including yourself bid you automatically sign a player to a 4 year 40M contract

Also on a side note the maximum years on a contract is four years.

So does this mean we only bid money and then decide the length of the contract after we win the player?

No the length of contract needs to be part of the bid like 2014 1M that would be an example of a bid

If I sign a player to a four year contract can I release him befor the four years or does he have to stay on my roster until hes traded?

No you can release a player at any time but half of their contract will affect your cap.
For example if i want to release Peyton Hillis at 8M until 2013. Then 4M dollars will affect my cap until the end of the 2013 season

That's a good way to handle it.

Yeah it makes people accountable for their signings. That way you can't way overbid on someone like ochocinco and then dump him for no penalty

Sorry for all the questions. How long does the auction last? Will it be when the actual preseason starts, or sooner?

The auction will always continue just when people fill up rosters and cap they will stop bidding.

if you want to sign a player for longer than the original contract after a year, how does that work

You cant you have to decide how long you want to keep a player. The longest you can keep a player is four years once you decide you cant change the years
